Mobile phones

My son is in year 3 and going away to band camp in a couple of weeks. Some of the kids are complaining because they can't take their mobile phones.

I asked him if many kids had them, he said that most of the kids in his grade have them. I asked if they were phones that they used or just that they played with, I guess I am behind the times because I think it is ridiculous that an 8 year old would have or need a mobile phone.

My son would never be away from me to the extent that he would even need one.

Have I got it all wrong?

God no!! That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard.

We used to lend our eldest an old mobile when he was at high school and going to the movies with friends or something, so that he could ring us when he needed to be picked up. Eventually we gave him our old phone - I think he was 13 or 14.

We did the same for the second child. Number 3 got a phone last year at almost age 12, but only because he had to catch the bus home when we moved house, and I wanted him to be able to call me at work, or get in touch with his brother who he was supposed to meet, if he had a problem.

8 years olds though? Crazy.

I'm with you. Why does an 8 year old need a phone?

8 year olds really can't comprehend that phone calls = $$$$.

We bought our daughter a mobile for Christmas when she hit high school. It was still up to her to earn the money to pay for the calls.

There is no need for an 8 year old to have a mobile but unfortunately it is becoming the norm. Mum is a primary school teacher and she says each school year the kids with phones are getting younger and younger.

You definately don't have it all wrong. The rest of the parents are nuts.

My 8 year old has to wait until high school and then only will get a phone if there is a demonstrated need for a phone and she has the pocket money income to pay for calls.

Not in the least!

Master 10 will not be able to have a mobile phone until he is old enough to have a part time job to earn income to pay for his calls. Thus endeth the old fashioned mummy rant.

I teach 5 and 6 year olds. Yes, I have seen the odd mobile in their bag 'in case I need to call them'. Call the school and lkeave a message, dare you NOT interrupt my class with ringing your child's phone!

My son just turned 11, he has a mobile phone, he is only allowed to use it for safety for when he is going for a ride with his friends, so I know he gets to his destination safely. I call him, he does not get credit, he knows 000 is free.
School is not the place to take a phone either, he does not take it there.
The phone was an old mobile of mine and now it is put to good use for safety and that is all.

Hi Claire

I have heard about that show on how to look great naked, but I need to find out what night it is on...

It looked interesting in the previews.

Thanks Claire... I'll have a look if any of it is online as well.

Cheers
